Chapter 9
I was in a happy mood because I was giving Kenzia some time with her mother, but now that I was inside her room and she was not here, I fell on her bed and wept. Henry had told me that my heart would be broken and I did not know what Kenzia was capable of, and he was right, but not in the way he was thinking. He thought that she might be a serial killer or something along that line, but the danger she posed to me was how much she was capable of making me love her and how easily she could break my heart. I lay on her bed in my pajamas and I wished that she was here with me. I had sent her a message to let her know that I had reached home in one piece, but she had not responded.
I checked the phone again, but there was still no message from her. She was probably busy talking to her mother. I wanted to make sure she was safely at the hotel so I called Shawn.
âHi, Detective.â
âHi, Shawn. Is everything okay?â
âYou know you can check her phone on the app, right?â he asked.
âWhy didnât you remind me? I never had to use it before.â
âTry it now,â he said and I searched for the app I had downloaded from the link he had sent me.
âIâm in.â
âWhere is she?â he asked.
âAt the hotel,â I replied.
âGreat.â
âThanks, Shawn.â
âAnytime. Have a good night,â he said.
âYou too,â I replied and disconnected the call.
I lay in Kenziaâs bed and looked at the indicator as it blinked her location at the hotel, but I wanted to hear her voice, so I called.
âHi, Marla,â she said excitedly.
âWhat are you girls doing?â I asked.
âWeâre talking about whenâ¦â
âLet me talk to her,â Lilieth said and took the phone.
âHi, Marla,â she greeted and I sat up on the bed.
âHi, Lilieth.â
âCall me Lili,â she said.
âOkay, Lili. How is it going?â
âShe has not stopped talking since you left. Iâm sure sheâs going to keep that up until I fall asleep,â she chuckled, and so did I. âIâm excited to see you tomorrow forâ¦oh no, I forgot that weâre banned from having breakfast.â
âI know,â I laughed.
âI can see that you really love her,â she said about Kenzia.
âI do very much.â
âI would have accepted your offer to move in with you, but itâs just a lot all at once. I need a few days to clear my head and then Kenzia and I will make a decision about where we will live.â
âTake your time. Iâm not going anywhere,â I said and realized that I had been blushing and playing with the strings on my pants.
âGood to knowâ¦â
âMom, come on. Weâre not done talking,â Kenzia whined.
âSorry, I have to go. I have a five-year report to get back to.â
I laughed.
âOkay, goodbye. See you tomorrow.â
âGoodnight,â she said. âOkay! Iâm doneâ¦â
I laughed because Kenzia was taking the phone away from her. I wished that they were here with me. I would
